SK Hynix unveils cutting-edge PCB01 SSD for AI PCs

SK hynix has announced the development of its latest solid-state drive (SSD) product, PCB01, designed specifically for AI PCs. The company is touting this new SSD as the first one in the industry to leverage the fifth generation of 8-channel PCIe technology to deliver unprecedented data processing speeds and power efficiency.

SK hynix expects PCB01 to enhance its leadership in the AI memory space, building on its success with high-performance DRAM, particularly High Bandwidth Memory (HBM). The company is currently validating PCB01 with a global PC customer and plans to begin mass production and shipping to both corporate and general consumers within the year.

PCB01 boasts sequential read and write speeds of 14GB and 12GB per second, respectively. These speeds are crucial for operating large language models (LLMs), which are essential for generative AI tasks such as text creation, summarization, and translation. The SSD’s performance allows for AI training and inference operations to be completed in mere seconds.

In addition to speed, PCB01 offers a significant improvement in energy efficiency, reducing power consumption by more than 30% compared to previous generations. This efficiency is vital for maintaining the stability of large-scale AI computing tasks.
The SSD also incorporates Single-Level Cell (SLC) caching technology, which places SLCs in certain parts of the NAND cell to accelerate performance. This technology enables faster processing of selected data, enhancing the performance of both AI services and conventional computing tasks.

Security is another key feature of PCB01. SK hynix has integrated a Root of Trust (RoT) security solution into the SSD to protect against external cybersecurity threats and prevent the forging and falsification of information. This solution also safeguards user passwords, ensuring personal data protection.

PCB01 will be available in three capacities: 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. Ahn Hyun, Head of the N-S Committee at SK hynix, emphasized the strong interest from global CPU providers in collaborating on compatibility validation processes. He expressed confidence that PCB01 will enhance SK hynix’s position as the top AI memory provider in the NAND solution space.
