Semiconductor startup Rain AI, backed by Sam Altman and Y Combinator, has announced the addition of Jean-Didier Allegrucci to its leadership team. Allegrucci, a seventeen-year Apple veteran and a highly respected figure in the semiconductor industry, will take on the role of Head of Hardware Engineering at the company.
At Apple, Allegrucci oversaw the development of more than 30 SoCs used for iPhones, Macs, iPads, Apple watches, and other products. Under his leadership, he established a world-class group for building SoCs, including SoC methodology, architecture, design, integration and verification, as well as leading many IP teams.
Rain AI is headquartered in San Francisco, is focused on the development of compute-in-memory (CIM) technology, which is aimed at reducing energy consumption by processing data where it is stored. Tech industry heavyweights Intel, TSMC, and Samsung are also researching CIM technology.
“We could not be more excited to have a hardware leader of J-D’s caliber overseeing our silicon efforts,” said Rain AI CEO William Passo. “Our novel compute-in-memory technology will help unlock the true potential of today’s generative AI models, and get us one step closer to running the fastest, cheapest, and most advanced AI models anywhere.”
In addition to Allegrucci, Rain AI recently welcomed Amin Firoozshahian, a senior architecture hire from Meta, to further strengthen its leadership team. These strategic hires reflect Rain AI’s aggressive push towards expanding its capabilities and boosting its competitiveness in the AI semiconductor space.
