Qualcomm is certainly not making any attempt to hide its ambitions in the on-device generative AI space, following up on its extensive announcements at MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2024 with equally strong messaging at its investor conference last Tuesday.
As the company’s CEO Cristiano Amon commented in prepared remarks, “We are bringing Gen AI capabilities to smartphone users worldwide… Our leadership in premium- and high-tier Android devices continues with our latest Snapdragon mobile platforms, which now feature significantly enhanced AI processing performance.”
While Qualcomm is strongly positioned in the on-device generative AI smartphone market with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform, repeating this feat in the PC segment will be a much greater challenge. Even though the benchmarks the company is touting for its forthcoming Snapdragon Elite processor look promising, it has a much more limited portfolio of products than either Intel or AMD and will need to build much strong relationships with the Taiwan PC manufacturing base if it is to achieve significant market penetration.
Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon appears undaunted by the challenge, claiming that the Snapdragon X Elite is “poised to set the industry benchmark for on-device Gen AI and Copilot experiences” because of its “industry-leading AI performance and significant improvements in performance and battery life.”
With Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger now confirmed as a third keynote speaker at Computex 2024 along with Cristiano Amon and AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su, the stage is well and truly set for an epic showdown for the AI PC leadership crown at this year’s event. After all the grimness and greyness of the last couple of years, it is great to see the PC market come back to life again.
