MediaTek demos Chromebook Kompanio 838 SoC at Computex

MediaTek is turning up the heat for Computex 2024 with its latest announcements of the Kompanio 838 SoC for premium Chromebooks and the Pentonic 800 SoC for premium 4K smart TVs and displays. Naturally, both chipsets feature dedicated AI accelerators to deliver more compelling user experiences.

The octa-core Kompanio 838 is designed for thin and light Chromebooks and, according to the company, ensures all-day battery life. The chip supports DDR4 and LPDDR4X DRAM, doubling the memory bandwidth of previous generations for increased data throughput, and integrates the MediaTek NPU 650, a dedicated AI processor that enhances multimedia interactions and power efficiency.

Other features include a built-in MediaTek Imagiq 7 series ISP that improves HDR imaging, dual camera support, and low-light capture; hardware accelerated AV1 video decoding that supports 4K streaming and dual displays; and Wi-Fi 6 and 6E technology to offer dual-band and tri-band connectivity options to Chromebooks with speeds up to 1.9Gbps.

The Pentonic 800 is tailored for a variety of 4K displays, including smart TVs, monitors, and commercial displays, and boasts a 50% increase in AI processing performance and a 60% reduction in bandwidth usage compared to its predecessor. The chip supports a raft of MediaTek’s AI-powered display technologies that improve upscaling, picture quality, and noise elimination, and also supports variable refresh rates up to 4K2K 165Hz to enhance gaming experiences. OEMs can also integrate MediaTek’s Filogic Wi-Fi and Bluetooth combo solutions to ensure reliable high-speed connectivity and seamless interactions with peripherals like game controllers and wireless headsets.

At Computex 2024, MediaTek will be showcasing its diverse product portfolio at a private booth. MediaTek Vice Chairman and CEO Dr. Rick Tsai will be giving a keynote at Computex entitled “Intelligence Everywhere: The Power of Ubiquitous AI” on Tuesday, June 4 at 13:30 Taiwan time at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center Hall 2 in Taipei, Taiwan.
