Computex 2024 Preview: Qualcomm and the PC reborn

Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon will no doubt arrive in Taipei for his Computex 2024 keynote with a spring in his step following the high-profile launch of over 20 new Microsoft CoPilot+ PCs featuring Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series processors last week.

With the Snapdragon X Series chips currently deemed as the “exclusive platform” for Microsoft CoPilot+ PCs, Qualcomm has an excellent opportunity to establish leadership in this new device category ahead of Intel and AMD and grab a large share of the 50 million units that Microsoft predicts will be shipped by the end of next year. Design wins with major global brands including Microsoft, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, and Asus show strong industry support for the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series and point to rapid adoption in both the commercial and consumer segments when the devices hit the market in June.

The Qualcomm CEO will, however, be warning his troops to guard against complacency as Intel and AMD fire up their responses with rumored launches of their Lunar Lake and Zen 5 processors at Computex. While Qualcomm has done a great job of promoting the 45 TOPS (trillions of operations per second) delivered by the Hexagon NPU (neural processing unit) as the most important measure of performance, its competitors are sure to hit back hard by showing that their next-generation platforms will achieve a much higher overall TOPS count than the Snapdragon X Series. Indeed, with Intel already claiming a total of 105 TOPS for its forthcoming Lunar Lake processor, a new round of benchmark wars is already breaking out!

Qualcomm’s entry into the PC market is part of a broader strategy to expand its footprint beyond smartphones and automotive sectors. It will be fascinating to learn how the company plans to build in its promising start at Mr Amon’s Computex 2024 keynote entitled “The PC Reborn” on June 3, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. (UCT+8) at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center Hall 2 7F.
